Family Shape Up

New FREE Healthy Family Cookery Programme - Bevendean, September 2017

Are you concerned about your family's eating habits? Would you like to learn about healthy eating, cook some tasty meals and play games together?

Family Shape Up and Cook is for children aged between 6-13 who're above their ideal weight and their families. This programme is lead by our Family and Schools Dietitian alongside Albion in the Community and our brilliant cookery teacher – we’ll be learning about different healthy eating and nutrition topics each week; including fussy eating, portion sizes and fats and sugars.

We cook up a new and exciting menu every week and everyone gets a chance to try new out new recipes and taste new foods. There are also fun activities and a chance for the kids to play games with our coach from Albion in the Community.

Join our next programme! There are still spaces, starting Thursday 7th September 4.30pm to 6.30pm at Bevendean Primary School (you don’t have to be a pupil at Bevendean to attend, the programme is open to all eligible families in Brighton and Hove). It’s fun and free - plus all food is provided.

Call us on 01273 431703 to book or for more info. Keep an eye on this page for upcoming courses throughout the year.

If you have any concerns or questions about your child's weight, and feel you would benefit from a one to one telephone or face to face appointment with one of our qualified dietitians, please contact the Healthy Weight Team on 01273 431703 or

We also host parent information sessions at schools and at the Brighthelm Community Centre on North Road near Brighton Station (see map).

The whole family can also be booked onto one of our 6 week healthy lifestyle group programmes for 6-13 year olds who are above their ideal weight. Each child needs to be accompanied by an adult family member and siblings are welcome to join in too!

We guide and help your family learn about healthy eating through fun activities and offer practical tips on topics such as food portion sizes, food labelling and building healthier habits.

Our Family Shape Up and Cook programmes also build skills and knowledge around cooking healthy, tasty meals from scratch. Children and their families cook  different healthy recipes each week with the help of our cookery teacher - firm favourites are our healthy fish and chips and our curry night, including home made flatbreads.

Friendly activity leaders and a coach from Albion in the Community are there to support and encourage the children to join in with games and promote physical activity in a fun and safe environment.

What to expect

The 6 week Family Shape Up programme consists of 6 weekly sessions, each lasting 1 1/2 hours followed by a final individual appointment to review your progress and discuss any further support. The sessions include 45 minutes learning about healthy eating through fun activities, followed by 45 minutes of games for the children alongside discussion time for the parents and carers.

Family Shape Up and Cook lasts 2 hours and includes preparing and eating a healthy meal together, as well as the nutritional advice and physical activities.

Expect a fun, relaxed and supportive group environment where you can share ideas and practical tips for the whole family.

We provide you with up-to-date, evidence-based information on healthy eating and the tools to help your family need for a healthier lifestyle.

Our help and support doesn't end when you have finished your Family Shape Up programme. We offer a 6 and 12 month follow up appointments, and information about local activities to engage with post programme.

All programmes are due to start in January 2017. Family Shape Up programmes take place at varying locations in Brighton and Hove throughout the year. Fill out the form at the bottom of the page to register your interest and we will contact you to discuss the options or simply call us on 01273 431703.

Get started

Use the BMI calculator below to check if your child is a healthy weight (not suitable for those under 2).

If the calculator shows that your child is above an ideal weight, and they are 6-13 years old, your family is eligible for our free weight management services. Please complete the form and we will contact you to discuss the options available or call us to discuss on 01273 431 703.

If your child is not eligible for our services, but you are still concerned about their weight, or want further information about healthy eating, we recommend the resources on the NHS website.

I can move faster now and I have more energy and feel happier about myself.

Participant (age 6)

I had my reservations before attending because I thought we were already eating a healthy diet, but we have learnt so much and the whole family is now eating more healthily.
