Purchasing sustainable and healthy food within large organisations

Large organisations like the city council and local NHS Trusts spend millions of pounds on food and catering services each year, so making changes to the way their food is produced, where and when it’s bought and how it’s consumed and disposed of, can bring huge benefits to people’s health, the environment and the local economy.

One million meals a month
In 2012, as part of the city-wide food strategy, the Food Partnership established the Good Food Procurement Group. Our role has been to act as a hub, bringing together catering managers and chefs from different organisations to share best practice, to make new contacts and to learn about the benefits of buying and serving good food.

Twenty organisations have been involved in the group so far including local NHS Trusts, universities, the city council, primary and secondary schools, community meals provider (‘meals on wheels’), care homes, workplaces and major venues. They collectively serve well over 1 million meals a month.

Get involved
If you are an organisation in the city that would like to improve the food you serve, you can take a number of key actions:

  1. Join the Good Food Procurement Group, contact us today.
  2. Find out more about what you can do to reduce and redistribute your food waste. If you are interested in carrying out a food waste audit or planning a plate waste engagement campaign, we can help, so get in touch. If you are looking to dispose of your food waste, you can contact the local food waste collection provider, Paper Round.
  3. Demonstrate that you provide healthier catering and vending– get involved in the city-wide Sugar Smart campaign, or find out if you’re eligible to go for a Healthy Choice Award.
  4. Source local and seasonal food – we have a Local Suppliers Directory with contact details of over 300 local suppliers. If you would like us to email you a copy, please contact us. Some of the local suppliers are also listed here.
  5. Serve only sustainable fish – find out where and what to buy and sign up to the Sustainable Fish Cities campaign too. If you want to serve and promote MSC fish, you’ll need to gain the MSC Chain of custody certification.
  6. Apply for the Soil Association’s Catering Mark.
  7. Develop a Food & Drink Strategy. We have a strong track record in this area, so would be happy to help you develop one, please contact us. Brighton University has an excellent Sustainable Food Policy that is worth looking at.
  8. Become a Living Wage employer.
