The project will:
- raise awareness of food growing around the city
- encourage more people to set up community growing spaces
- celebrate our existing community gardens
- share knowledge around growing, cooking and eating edible plants
Through this project we want to make it easier for anyone who wants to grow to be able to get permission and understand what they need to do to start growing.
Right to Grow
We will be working with Brighton & Hove City Council to create a procedure for current land around housing and new planning developments so that they can incorporate well-looked-after edible planting schemes. Brighton & Hove City Council have just passed a ‘Right to Grow’ motion. This means that the council is committed to:
- Promoting biodiversity through food growing on council-owned land
- Encouraging developers to include space for food growing in new developments
- Supporting local food growing through community gardens
Edible Landscapes
We will develop edible planting landscapes with Brighton Permaculture Trust, Growing Hollingdean and Saunders Park Edible Garden to demonstrate what is possible and inspire others. Planting and training sessions will be happening this winter, please let us know if you would like to help out.
