This page has information about membership schemes where you can access low-cost food. The community projects’ source food from surplus that would otherwise go to waste, bulk buying food to get discounts and direct buying from local farmers.

Low-cost food membership schemes

Allganics Wholefood Co-op
What: Allganics is an independent wholefood co-operative which works within Brighton Unemployed Families Centre. They sell organic and fair-trade dry goods and toiletries sourced from Infinity Foods.
Where: 6 Tilbury Place, Brighton, BN2 0GY

BrightStore (Hollingdean)
What: BrightStore is a weekly ‘social store’ giving local families access to high quality, local, affordable food including bread, eggs, fruit and vegetables along with other essential items, for a suggested donation of £4 for 1 or 2 people, and £6 for a larger shop. We are a solidarity scheme, so all are welcome on a ‘pay it forward’ basis.
Where: Hollingdean Community Centre, Thompson Road, Hollingdean, Brighton BN1 7BH
Opening times: Every Tuesday, 1pm-4pm

Moulsecoomb Community Market
What: Moulsecoomb Community Market is a social supermarket run by the community for local residents in Moulsecoomb & Bevendean. They offer a selection of food and household items for £3.50 a week. You can sign-up as a member for £1.
Where: St George’s Hall, Newick Rd, Brighton BN1 9JG
Opening times: Every Wednesday, 10.30am-12.30pm (during lockdown, members will be given a slot)
How to sign up: Text in advance and then sign up on the day (membership may need to be closed if numbers get too high, but there will be a waiting list if this happens)

Very Local Food Hub stall at Moulsecoomb Community Market

Very Local Food Hubs
What: Very Local Food Hubs in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean is a weekly fresh food box service available for collection from a hub in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean or delivery for those who are isolating/vulnerable.
Where: Moulsecoomb and Bevendean
Opening times: Pick up from Moulsecoomb Community Market on Weds mornings from 10 – 12 and at Bevendean Food Bank or you can arrange for a delivery.

Community Fridges

Community Fridges are where you can access free food that would otherwise have gone to waste. There are Community Fridges at Old Boat Community Centre and Weald Allotments. More info here.

Co-ops and buying groups

PigShare
What: PigShare is a new venture supplying pork to Brighton & Hove from Hathor Farm, a fully organic and free range farm in a wooded setting. Each share of pork is one eighth of a whole animal, butchered down into individually wrapped cuts. Each one eighth share costs £65.

Scoop (Sussex Co-op)
What: Sussex University student-run co-op which buys dry wholefoods (such as rice, pulses and nuts) in bulk and sells them at a reduced cost on campus.
Where: Library Square market, Sussex University Campus, Falmer. (If it’s cold they are inside Falmer House)
Opening times: Tuesdays 11am-3pm

sheep on the downs

Sheep Share
What: Sheep Share aims to get sheep that are currently grazing in and around Brighton & Hove into the city as lamb. You can buy one-quarter of a whole animal, butchered down into individually vacuum packed cuts from the back legs to the neck, plus mince. Each share costs £42.
Where: The lamb quarters are collected from: Yew Tree House, 5 B Preston Park Avenue, BN1 6HJ.

University of Brighton Food Co-op
What: The University’s Food Co-op is student-run organisation promoting healthy, local and seasonal foods. They supply weekly fruit & veg boxes sourced from local farms. Moulsecoomb and Falmer campuses also sell dried wholefoods. To become a member visit the Students’ Union Reception desk at Grand Parade, Moulsecoomb or Falmer campuses.
Where: Moulsecoomb, Falmer, Grand Parade and Hastings campuses
