Sustainable Food Cities

Sustainable Food Cities network

Brighton & Hove Food Partnership is a member of the UK Sustainable Food Cities (SFC) network. This is a growing movement of 51 towns, cities, boroughs and regions that share the same approach for transforming food, food culture and who recognise the role of food as a catalyst for change in addressing key economic, environmental and social issues.

The SFC Awards – Going for Gold!

In 2015, Brighton & Hove became the first city to be awarded the then top Silver Sustainable Food Cities Award.

In November 2018, we formally submitted our bid to ‘go for gold!’.

This follows a year-long consultation to gather commitments and ideas from across the city and beyond as part of our refresh of the city’s Food Strategy Action Plan.

We’re asking residents, visitors, schools and businesses to take action – find out what you can do to turn your actions into gold.

Brighton & Hove Food Partnership have been the pre-eminent city food pioneer in the UK: the first to adopt a city-wide sustainable food procurement policy, the first to formally integrate growing space into new developments and the first to achieve Sustainable Food Cities Silver status.

Today marks yet another fantastic milestone in their journey as they launch their ambitious plans to become the first ever Gold Sustainable Food City and, in the process, set the bar for just what is possible when creative and committed people collaborate to transform our food system.

SFC campaigns

Each year, the SFC network focuses on a key food issue and works to help towns and cities across the Network to drive significant change on that issue. Having focused on food procurement in 2014, on food poverty in 2015-16, sugar reduction in 2017-18, the campaign for the year ahead will be to help places become Veg Cities.
