Homemade Burgers

Why not try making your own burgers? Using good quality locally produced meat means your are supporting local farmers and eating better too.

Serves 4 people

  • 1 small onion
  • 500 grams minced meat (try lean pork, lamb or beef, turkey or veggie mince)
  • 2 tablespoon(s) breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg beaten
  • Salt & pepper
  • Oil
  • Burger buns (try wholemeal or make our own)
  • Salad – (onion, tomato, lettuce, cucumber, gerkins)

  1. Chop the onion finely. Heat the oil in a frying pan and gently fry the onion till it is soft – about 8 minutes.
  2. Put the meat and breadcrumbs into a bowl. Add some salt and pepper, the beaten egg and the fried onions. Why not try adding chilli, garlic, mint, rosemary or spring onions to jazz it up a little.
  3. Using your hands, mix everything together so that all the ingredients are combined.
  4. Preheat the grill. Shape into 4 or 5 burgers, about 1 cm thick.
  5. Brush them with oil and cook under a hot grill for a few minutes on both sides, until they are cooked… no pink juices should come out. You can also put them on the BBQ or fry them for a few minutes on each side in a little oil.
  6. Wash some lettuce leaves and slice some onion, cucumber and tomato.
  7. Cut the burger buns in half.
  8. When the burgers are ready, put them in your burger buns with the salad. Add sauces, other veg or cheese to make them extra tasty.
