Queens Park Community Composting

This site is currently full. Please contact the Food Partnership on compost@bhfood.org.uk to be added to the waiting list or look for other sites nearby.
We help set-up and support community compost schemes across the city, in partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council. Read our compost FAQ to find out why the Council don’t collect food waste.

A great way to reduce food waste is to compost your fruit and veg peelings. We’ve got some simple to follow tips for getting started composting at home.

Community composting provides a solution for residents without gardens. We currently support nearly 40 community compost schemes – in parks, allotments and community gardens – with over 1,500 households taking part. Compost produced from these schemes has been used in parks, community gardens and food growing projects in local schools.

How it works

The Food Partnership provides training and ongoing support to volunteers who manage community composting schemes. Each scheme has two compost monitors who offer inductions for new members joining the schemes and liaise with the Food Partnership to keep everything running smoothly.

The bins are secured with code padlocks – members are given the code once they have had their induction. This helps ensure only the right materials are being put in the bins.

Members get plenty of advice and information and many of them say this is a great way of connecting with and getting to know neighbours and members of their community. Find out more about how schemes work in our FAQ.

At the moment, almost all of our existing schemes are full and not accepting new members.

Check if your nearest scheme has space using our directory map (select ‘composting’ under type of project). If you find a scheme with space further afield that you are prepared to travel to, please get in touch with us to join.

In order to find out when schemes are open, sign-up to our email newsletter or check this webpage.
