Food Foundations (Community cookery course) – FULL

About this event

Join us for FOOD FOUNDATIONS to learn essential cookery skills and gain confidence – for those looking to work or volunteer in food or just cook tastier, healthier food at home.

Who’s this for? This course is for anyone who wants to gain confidence and learn some transferrable catering & cookery skills. There is no specific eligibility criteria.

Course structure:

We’ll spend five sessions (one session per week) at the Community Kitchen building up skills including:

  • Learning and improving knife and kitchen skills
  • Gaining knowledge of flavours and ingredients
  • A focused session with our Nutritionist to better understand the essentials of healthy eating
  • Growing in experience and confidence to create meals from surplus food and leftovers, making the most of what is available
  • A visit to a local community garden or other community food project (season/ weather permitting)

There is also an optional, full-day session which is a Food Hygiene Level 2 training. All those passing the test on the day will receive their Level 2 Certificate afterwards.

After the course is completed, our team are also available to offer some support for participants looking to progress to studies, work or volunteering opportunities to build on their progress during the formal sessions.

  • Wednesday 9th November 10am-1pm
  • Wednesday 16th November 10am-1pm
  • Wednesday 23rd November 10am-1pm
  • Wednesday 30th November 10am – 1pm
  • Optional:  Food Hygiene training Wednesday 7th December 10am – 4pm
  • Industry Visit Monday 12th December 10am – 1pm

This course will run again over the next year, further details will be announced on our website and in our email newsletters.

This project is funded by The Big Lottery Community Fund and is part of a national project Ready, Healthy, Eat led by The Real Farming Trust and working with organisations in Edinburgh, Waltham Forest and Belfast.

Cost:

We ask for a £5 donation per session (suggested), depending what you can afford. Speak to us if cost is a barrier. Payments can be made in cash at each session.
