Frequently Asked Questions for events at Stanmer Wellbeing Gardens

  • How do I find the site?

Please familiarise yourself with the site before the day of your event.  Please give everyone attending instructions on how to get to your chosen site,  and give them your phone number should they get lost.  Please tell participants not to wander onto other plots as they may have therapeutic sessions running. You can access and share our Googlemap of the site here.

Full directions, maps and what3words codes are available here.

  • Will anyone be there on the day?

No, our Wellbeing Gardens are do-it-yourself style spaces. We can arrange a tour of the spaces before you book, but you will be self-managing the booking on the day.

We do offer paid services for events e.g. outdoor team-building days, if you’d like more help with running your event.

  • Can I have a fire?

Yes! We know that gathering around a fire is one of the biggest attractions when hiring our spaces, and all our gardens have a fire pit area you can use. Further details to consider:

    • You can either bring your own fire wood to burn or book a fire kit with us as part of the booking process (you will receive a link to purchase this once you make your booking).
    • If you bring your own wood you will need to be responsible for bringing safety equipment, including a fire bucket, fire gloves etc.
    • Please do not use wood from the surrounding woodland – wood needs to be left on the floor as this is good for biodiversity.
    • Please only use designated fire circles.
    • Please make sure that the fire is extinguished with water before you leave.
    • We reserve the right to ban fires in the Wellbeing Gardens if there are national warnings against fire in hot spells of weather.
  • What do I need to bring?

Stanmer Wellbeing Gardens are DIY-style spaces so you’ll need to bring:

    • Drinking water or your own facilities to boil water (or book one of our fire kits and you will be supplied with a kettle & grill to use)
    • Appropriate clothes for the weather – although we woodchip our spaces they can get muddy when it rains
    • A first aid kit
    • Directions to the site, if you haven’t been before
    • Please only bring biodegradable items if there is a risk they may litter the site e.g. balloons, glitter or confetti
  • Accessibility

The Wellbeing Gardens have uneven surfaces and wood chip paths throughout. Each site is slightly different in terms of accessibility:

    • The Woodland Garden does not have any matting, but the ground is relatively level and has been used by wheelchair users. The gate is 112cm wide.
    • The Pond Garden has wheelchair friendly matting underneath the wood chip, and a ramp going up to the decking next to the pond, as well as a wide gate. Please contact us if you’ll be coming down in a wheelchair so that we can ensure that the path leading to the Pond Garden is suitably cut back.
    • The Gathering Glade does not have any matting underneath, and the gate + path leading to it are too narrow for a wheelchair to fit through.

For disabled toilets head to One Garden, which is next door and has a Changing Spaces disabled toilet that is wheelchair accessible.

For more details about accessibility, please get in touch with a member of the team.

  • How much noise can I make?

Stanmer Wellbeing Gardens is a therapeutic space with a lot of wildlife, so we can’t allow loud amplified sound as it might disturb groups and nature.

We welcome small singing groups without amplification, but please let us know your plans as you book so we can minimise disruption to any other groups on site.

Please be mindful of noise on the site, especially where we have placed signs saying “quiet please”. If you are supervising children please ensure they are also respectful of these spaces.

  • Do you have drinking water?

There is a small tap near to the Woodland Garden which you’re welcome to use, but although it is drinking water the pipe works at Stanmer are very old and therefore we have to advise that you drink at your own risk. We’d recommend either boiling the water first or bringing your own water on site.

  • Are there toilets?

The nearest public toilets are located by the restaurant at One Garden, which is 5 minute walk away.

  • Can I park on-site?

There is no free parking nearby but several paid car parks. The closest car park is the Patchway Car Park, but you can also park near Stanmer Church. You can drop off equipment on the site with a vehicle before 5pm. After 5pm the gates can close so don’t get locked in.

  • What should I do in an emergency?

Call 999 if you are experiencing an emergency.

Here are the What3words location codes that will give the emergency services an exact location of our three garden sites at Stanmer Park.

    Pond Garden: “swing.lasted.define”

    Gathering Glade: “much.splash.change”

    Woodland Garden: “corn.exists.snail”

  • How should I leave the space?

Please make sure you leave the site as you found it. Our spaces are habitats for all types of wildlife. We especially ask that you don’t leave rubbish on site. If you want to decorate for parties please try to use eco-friendly decorations like fabric bunting or flower confetti rather than plastic decorations like balloons, glitter or party poppers.

Please do not the move the log seating stumps to different areas of the plot, as they need to be used by other events and groups.

If you hired a fire kit from us, please return all the contents to the locked storage box.

  • Can I hire the spaces at night time?

Yes, absolutely! You can book your hire through our online system up until 10pm (at which point any late events must have vacated the site).

The Wellbeing Gardens are located next to One Garden, who occasionally host evening events with loud music. We have no control over this, and would advise checking the One Garden website for any advertised events in case this would be an issue for your booking.

  • What should I do if I have feedback?

We welcome all feedback about our spaces. If you’d like to send a short story or photos from your booking for us to share on social media please email [email protected].

If you have feedback you’d like to share with the team please fill out our survey form, or email us at [email protected].

  • What are the terms of the hire agreement?

By booking a hire slot at one of our gardens, all hirers are confirming their agreement with the Stanmer Wellbeing Gardens Terms & Conditions of use.
